How to flash new firmware on Zenithink ZT-180

September 2nd, 2010

Step 1: Download the latest firmware (Check my other posts for the Android fw)

Step 2: With the tablet turned off, connect it to your computer using the mini-USB port. (also make sure you have power connected!)

Step 3: On the tablet, hold down the Menu button and then press the Power button. You will now see a Found New Hardware popup on your computer. From the New Hardware screen you need to locate the USB driver which is located in my latest firmware download.

Note: If the device fails to install, go to device manager, click on Unknown Device, click on reinstall drivers, browse to where the USB drivers are and reinstall them.

Note 2: These drivers will only work on 32bit systems.

Step 4: Once the USB drivers are install correctly, open burntool_v07.2.exe. The first device should now be lit up green.

Photobucket

Step 5: Click on Settings in the menu and you will see a box like in the image below. In the boxes outlined in red, select u-boot.img, zImage_cui, system.img, userdata.img. When done, click on Save button below (The one on the left).

Photobucket

Step 6: Click on Start on the top left and it will start flashing your tablet with the new firmware. The status bar will load to 100% 4 times (Takes between 1-2 minutes). Once its complete it will say UpdatePipeState: 0x600000f 6 at the bottom.

Photobucket

Step 7: Turn off your tablet by holding the Power button down for 10 seconds. Now Press the Power button to turn back on.

I cannot get a driver loaded. Keep getting message that no driver is available. When I browse to USB Driver, it still can’t find it. What am I doing wrong? Windows 7.

    @Jim

You may be running Windows 7 64bit which it will not work on. If not, try removing the device under device manager, plug into a different port and then reinstall drivers.

Thank you so much for this guide and site, I was EASILY able to flash my ZT-180. It fixed many issues I was having and has made the unit altogether nicer!
I still cannot mount the unit’s drives in windows (I am XP 32 bit). I can connect via special mode and flash with secbulk drivers. I can connect in USB debug mode with the Android SDK drivers and it comes up in Device Manager as an Android phone. But I can’t see it in explorer. I have two other epad devices and they just connect via usb and their nand and flash appear in windows explorer. Am I missing an app on the ZT-180 itself?
One final question, is it likely that Android 2.2 will be released for the ZT-180 forseeabally?
Thanks again for a super guide, I was lost without this site!

I’ve got Win7, can’t connect the driver… How do i do to make it work?

  5. Beau
    September 9th, 2010 at 09:23 | #5

@davidr No problems David. I haven’t even tried mounting it yet. I will try and let you know. As for 2.2, I’m not sure.. Maybe if more ram was allocated using RamDisk.

@Rig Are you on Win7 32bit or 64bit? Check in System properties. These drivers are only for 32bit.

@Thomas I had that problem once. Place the burntool and files in a folder under C:. Delete the burntool.ini, redo the settings and re-flash. Should work

I followed your guide, got the driver installed which seems to be succesfull for a device called SEC SOC Test Board. Run the burningtool in which device 10 is green. Selected the appropriate image files and clicked the left most button to save. Just as note, you write for zImage_cui, but the file in your 0827 release is actually called zImage.

If I now click start it seems to do someting, but I never see the progress bar go to 100%, let alone 4 times. To the right of the progressbar I see u-boot and some strange character, probably because my installation is English with no support for Chinese characters.

After a little while of seemingly nothing happening, the screen on the ZT180 shows the epad symbol, the one you see when booting normally, which stays there untill the device boots after a very long time. Checking the firmware it still shows 0826.

    Might you have any idea??

    Thanks for any input

    I’m using xp pro sp3 32bit English.

Has anyone gotten Pandora to run on their ZT-180?

That is my main motivation for flashing, I want to get access to Andriod market and see if the pandora app will work.

I just got mine. How do you check to see what firmware version is installed?

I got an email from the manufacturer of my unit saying they were working on a 2.2 update.

    That would be really cool.

First, let me open how I should have opened my previous comment. Thank you for all of your work. It inspires me to not give up.

On the subject of giving up . . with the failure to complete the flash process from my comment above, what I now have is a $250.00 brick. The boot process only proceeds to the smaller ANDROID screen, and never progresses to the graphical screen.

    *sigh*

I love tech projects where it seems all documentation is written in a language I can’t read.

  18. September 19th, 2010 at 07:25 | #18

As an instructor once told me . . . patience is more than a virtue, it can be a punishment.

On my 12th try, I readjusted the usb cable one more time, and afterward tried again. SUCCESS! Seems the mini-usb socket is a bit loose.

Thank you so much for the procedure, and your assistance.

I too was having problems flashing the device and getting the same indications as you guys. It appears the instructions are missing one vital step. You must have the power adaptor plugged into the unit or nothing exciting will happen with the progress bar

I have never tried flashing without power but I guess you should always flash firmware with power connected.. just in case :) *Added to step 2.

Is there anyone out there who can help? Just got my Zenithink yesterday – and already hate it. I can’t get it to connect to wifi a foot away from my router.

Was able to successfully install UniversalAndroot and RootExplorer successfully, but I can’t install any of these updates. I power off my tablet, connect the mini USB to my tablet and computer, press menu/start at the same time on my talet, get the “found new hardware” box to come up on my computer… and cannot get any further. My computer brings up a “found new hardware wizard.” Asks if I want to connect to windows update to search for new software. I click no, it asks if I have an installation cd or want to locate the file from a specific location. I select from a specific location. Then it goes into a bunch of driver stuff. Regardless, this wizard isn’t finding the files that I downloaded. It appears as though the downloads are in a .rar file format. Do I have to run the files first?

I really am NOT a techie person – took me 8 hours to unlock my iphone. So, needless to say, my frustration levels are at an all time high. Feel like I just purchased a $250 piece of junk.

    @Apad Dude,

Thanks for that one, the clue was the power adapter.

I wasted all my time making sure the battery was fully charged to make sure it wouldn’t die halfway the upgrade before trying this.

No worries Droodled, glad I was able to help. I too suffered endlessly, thinking how hard could this be, what the hell am I doing wrong. After screwing around for sometime trying to flash my battery was getting low so I put in the adaptor and presto. The I saw your post and I saw you too were walking down the same path as me

So everyone take note TO FLASH THE DEVICE, PLUG IN THE POWER ADAPTOR

    Good luck all

If everything works right, does the new firmware version show up in About Device -> Build Number as eng.wwang.20100827… ? I followed the instructions (saw UpdatePipeState: 0×600000f 6) and still see …0826.

I have the same problem as ApadDude and droodled but I have always flashed my zt-180 with the power adapter in. I have the adapter plugged into a UK power converter, I presume everyone does though.

I have put a post in the apad forums (http://www.apad.tv/apadforum/showthread.php?132-Flashing-Problem&p=531#post531)

If anyone can shed some light on why it boots into android rather then flashing it would be much appreciated.

Well I have apparently bricked my ZT-180. It is now stuck on ANDROID start up screen, and won’t advance beyond that. I guess I should have left it the way it came 4 days ago. Any help would be appreciated.

    September 24th, 2010 at 06:25 | #29

If it boots up after a very long time and you still see 0% and you have the power adapter plugged in, make sure you are also actually pointing the burntool to the locations on your computer where you have unpacked and then saved each file (u-boot.img, zImage_cui, system.img, userdata.img) in Step5 above.

  30. ApadDude
    September 24th, 2010 at 23:52 | #30

    @CWayman
I used XP SP2 and it worked OK but I had a similar issue during the time I figured out the power adaptor thing. I had my files buried deep in my directory tree and it didn’t seem to work. I made a new folder in the first level of the tree, got to step 5 and clicked the “browser” link and selected the new location for my files and presto … progress … the error message now changed. It was the same time I discovered the power thing so it may have been unrelated but I just though I would let you know especially because you are doing it through Linux and VM and it might be directory tree related (it may or may not help you).

The other thing I wonder if your USB ports are falling back 1.1 because of the VM. Once again it might not be relevant but who knows.

  31. CWayman
    September 25th, 2010 at 00:44 | #31

Thanks for all your help guys.

It appears the problem was because I was using a virtual machine for XP using virtualbox. I could let the XP VM connect to the M16 after it was put into flash mode by sharing the host device with the VM, but it appears after it goes onto the ePad screen the VM lost the connection to the M16. If I shared the usb device again with the VM immediately after the ePad screen came up all other three files flashed successfully, presumably otherwise it just timed out waiting for the other files and started to boot normally. So the problem was actually that the VM was loosing connection to the device even though it was plugged it via usb.

Hopefully this will help someone else using linux and flashing with virtualbox.

I now have it flashed and used RPMScript 1.2 to get all of the google apps onto the tablet.

    Life is now gooooood :-D

    Hello all,

OK I’ve flashed it and it still says 0826. Got it from:

Hey Devin, I couldn’t find your previous post

I got my software at http://dl.dbank.com/c0042287ke and it worked OK. I suggest you try this one

And before flashing it was 0826 and after flashing it definietly says 0827

Are you getting the 100% bar to go multiple times as per step 6 ? Mine took some time to do all 4

What operating system are you using?. I used XP SP2 on a laptop and it worked fine (once I sorted out that I had to have to power supply plugged in)

Hi, these instructions are great however when I extract the files, system, u-boot and userdata show as winzip files and I can’t select them in burntool. I’m using winxp sp3 and I can’t see anything about 64 bit so I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I’m using winrar393. I also watched the video on zenithink.com to make sure but still no luck. Help!

I was having the same problem as droodled and tablet nut. If you guys have an ethernet cable plugged in, unplug it and see if that helps.

    November 16th, 2010 at 23:21 | #45

Well thank you for starting this post. The instructions were very helpful.
I had trouble today and spent over 3 hours flashing my ZT180 mainly due to the issue of the mini usb cable being a bit dicky. But I persisted and finally flashed to version 1030. I also had trouble with the blue status bar not appearing but found that when I went to Burntool_v07.2 as soon as I turned the Zenithink tablet on and into flash mode that I was able to commence the start process and the blue progress bars appeared.
So far it looks like the upgrade was worth it as the ZT180 seems faster and has more features.
    Cheers

Hey guys, having trouble flashing my epad.

I originally did a flash when I was back in Hong Kong to get it to 0826. It was on a Win XP SP2 machine and everything worked perfectly. I thought it was a piece of cake at that time.

Now I’m back home, 2 months later, want to flash it to 1030 on another Win XP SP2 machine.

I can get the drivers recognised properly on Win XP machine. I can get the flashing to start as well, but after the first file was done (100%), the epad suddenly “turned on” and display the epad/android screen, and just go blank there. The PC then detects the USB device was disconnected and reconnected, but this time does not recognise the driver. Burntool then no longer show the device is available.

Now the device is effectively bricked as I cannot finish the flashing process. Does anyone else have a problem with your epad “restart” automatically during the flashing process?

    Hope someone can help me!

    Cheers

Hi, I have tried several times to install the USB driver using the instructions provided, and it never works. Once, it started to do the install as described but then crashed with a blue screen of death.

I have a Win XP computer, and the firmware version on my Zenithink is 20101030.
    Any ideas?

P.S. Have tried to do it manually through device manager multiple times, always fails.

  49. Isabel
    December 1st, 2010 at 23:06 | #49

First thing: It’s apparently critical to hold the menu & power buttons down for a full 4 seconds to get the driver to fully install. Finally green light went on in burntool program!

However, shortly afterwards I get a message that “A USB device on this computer has malfunctioned,” and green light is off when I restart burntool program.

Does this HAVE to be done all in one operation? Driver cannot be installed first, then finish burning later?

Thank you for any additional info you can provide…

    Guys/Gal,

I have Windows 7 with 64 bit OS. I was in the process to install firmware 1126 using Burntool ver 7.41 with no luck. I’ve also tried to change the compatibility to Windows XP (SP3) with no luck. Does anyone have a Windows 7 with 64 bit solution.

    Thanks,
