Easy Root & txPower fix on Zenithink ZT-180

August 25th, 2010

There are a lot of people who are unfamiliar with Android and the SDK so I thought I would show you the easy way to gain root access and apply the txpower fix. If you don’t already know, the txpower fix changes the txpower value from 100 to 20 which gives you better wifi performance plus helps with temperature problems. It should also slightly increase battery life.

Follow these steps below

Step 1: Download UniversalAndroot – This application is very easy to use and will root your zt-180 in about 20 seconds. Download to a USB flash drive and install via file manager or install directly from your tablet by clicking on the link. Once installed open the app and click root.

   Mirror:  http://www.filedropper.com/universalandroot161

Step 2:  Download SuperUser – (There is no need to download this file anymore as it’s installed as part of UniversalAndroot). This application gives a program permission to run root functions. There is no need to open the app once it’s installed.

Step 3:  Download RootExplorer – This is the ultimate file manager giving you complete read/write access to Android’s file system. Install and then run. Upon opening RootExplorer you will get a superuser popup – tick the Remember box and then click on Allow.

   Mirror:  http://www.filedropper.com/rootexplorerv281

Step 4:  Once RootExplorer is open, navigate to /etc/Wireless/RT2870/ and you should see a file called RT2870STA.dat

Step 5: Above that file, select the grey button that says Mount R/W. It should now say Mount R/O

Step 6:  Press down on file RT2870STA.dat until you get the menu popup. Now select Open in Text Editor down the bottom in that list of options

Step 7:  On the 12th line down where it says TxPower=100, change the value of 100 to 20.

Step 8:  Now click on the Home button and then click Yes to save changes.

I am building a website and a blog to discuss the new tablets and also a purchase page for the zt-180 and the e7002 and If you don’t mind I will add a link to your website and the great information you have posted. Thanks again for being up to date and thorough with the zt180 firmware and issues!

No probs guys. I’m yet to do the market fix plus apply a heatsink and antenna to the wifi module. I’ll try to do that this weekend if I get some time.

Hello there. Did the txPower fix. Definitively an improvement in range I can now go across my flat (say about 12 meters -ca. 35 feet- across 3 rooms) and still the unit is in wifi range. Anyway … How did you figure out that a.- u could tune this specific setting b.- a setting of 20 did the trick? Old fashion trial-&-error?. Many thanks Beau!

@Patxi62 Glad it did the trick! I can’t take credit for the fix though. I think someone over on the xda forums recommended it :)

Thanks for the good instructions. Because I’m a noob at this, doing this doesn’t wipe out the machine or anything, right? I would assume your instructions would have included backup steps if it did. Everytime I read about ‘root’ for android phones it always has you back everything up first, so I’m just making sure the process is different for the tablets.

    Hi Beau,

Stupid question. How do you find out what version or what rom update is loaded on a ZT-180 pad? I just received one in the mail and want to make sure it is up to date and I also want to root it as well. I see you have a “Rooting for Dummies” instructions. Bravo! Thanks.

To add to previous request: I’m not sure about the updates, thats why I’m asking, but do each of the updates need to be flashed or will the most recent incorporate all? I wouldn’t think that they do, but want to make sure. Thanks again!

    @Martin

I did the txPower fix and it appeared to have a reverse effect on me. When I was undoing it i accidentally deleted the file. What’s the easiest way to fix this? Grab someone else’s file? Reflash my device?

Hi, I bought zt-180 10days back. I tried to fix the wifi by following above method. problem is that: when I open the root-explorer its displaying that it doesnt have root access due to issues with the superuser. this occurs when you first time open this, and may be normal from next time, so exit and restart the application.
    pls help me solve this…
my wifi is not at all good!

    THANKS………:-)

Hi Beau, thanks again for another awesome guide, just the right amount of detail for me.
I put the 1020 f/w on and it runs well, I have found no issues with it yet. Market and all things google working out of the book.
Followed your root and power fix, too easy. Wireless still working well.
I did have the issue where I didn’t get the Open in text editor, just open as text, when using old version of root explorer, got new version and hey presto, there was the option allowing me to edit line.
The chap who deleted part of the file, if still an issue I imagine we can post the txt for the file?
Anyway thanks again for such a great HOW TO SITE.
    kind regards
    DavidR

    HI,
Does anyone know if the updates for firmware and the changes here work on the Android 7″ MID with Android 2.0 system? I would like to update it, but don’t want to screw it up.

    Thanks, Tim

Followed the instructions to the point of pressing RT2870STA.dat but, the only options in the pop up window are [Delete, Rename, Copy, Move, Permissions, Properties, Add Bookmark, and Set As Home].
There is no option to select [Open In Text Editor]. I’m stuck. Anyone have any sugestions?

    Hi! Thanks for the directions,
I have a quick question, after Ive followed
    the instructions should I….
for Step 5: Above that file, select the grey button that says
Mount R/O press it to return to to original setting after
making changes? or if I leave it will my zt 180 be left open to any
    type of anauthorized changes?
    Thanks again!

    December 6th, 2010 at 15:00 | #37

@jlb76 Yes, you can return it to the original setting if you wish. Doing this will prevent any accidental deletions :p

    @Pastor Wilson
Well, I did some checking, this is normal to get an antivirus warning and does not pose a problem. Good directions, this easy root procedure works well.
