Easy Root & txPower fix on Zenithink ZT-180

August 25th, 2010

There are a lot of people who are unfamiliar with Android and the SDK so I thought I would show you the easy way to gain root access and apply the txpower fix. If you don’t already know, the txpower fix changes the txpower value from 100 to 20 which gives you better wifi performance plus helps with temperature problems. It should also slightly increase battery life.

Follow these steps below

Step 1: Download UniversalAndroot – This application is very easy to use and will root your zt-180 in about 20 seconds. Download to a USB flash drive and install via file manager or install directly from your tablet by clicking on the link. Once installed open the app and click root.

Step 2:  Download SuperUser – (There is no need to download this file anymore as it’s installed as part of UniversalAndroot). This application gives a program permission to run root functions. There is no need to open the app once it’s installed.

Step 3:  Download RootExplorer – This is the ultimate file manager giving you complete read/write access to Android’s file system. Install and then run. Upon opening RootExplorer you will get a superuser popup – tick the Remember box and then click on Allow.

Step 4:  Once RootExplorer is open, navigate to /etc/Wireless/RT2870/ and you should see a file called RT2870STA.dat

Step 5: Above that file, select the grey button that says Mount R/W. It should now say Mount R/O

Step 6:  Press down on file RT2870STA.dat until you get the menu popup. Now select Open in Text Editor down the bottom in that list of options

Step 7:  On the 12th line down where it says TxPower=100, change the value of 100 to 20.

Step 8:  Now click on the Home button and then click Yes to save changes.

JohnM :having problem with editing the file, can’t get RW access even though ZT-180 is rooted. There is a shield on the file picture, I assume it’s protected. Any idea how to remove this ?

    Running Android 2.2 v0304

@MiXAL I have a ZT-180a, and I’m having the same problem. I don’t know how to tell what my ROM number is (good thing I’m not upgrading, huh?), but the Kernel Number is 2.6.32.9 root@android #2642. Is 2642 my ROM number.

I down loaded these file to be able to use the adhoc wi-fi to allow my zt180 to connect via my evo. Everything on this page went smoothly, and the adhoc switcher opened up fine. After that, I the wi-fi connect for the default wouldn’t re-set, so I couldn’t set up my evo password/info to allow the dhoc connecting. So, right now I have no adhoc, nor wi-fi connection. When I try to allow the wi-fi to connect from my zt180 settings, if won’t allow if.

Help, please. I’m a noob. Sorry.

This may or may not work. If you long press (press and hold for a second) on the wi-fi connection under wi-fi settings, you’ll get a menu that comes up, and one of the options is “Forget.” Select that option, and your ZT180 will forget the wi-fi connection. Then you can turn off wi-fi and turn it back on, and you should see it again. Try reentering your password and see if that helps.

    @Rick
    Hi Rick….

Nope, sorry, but it doesn’t work. All of my wi-fi connections are gone, and the wi-fi locator bar is dark.
Do you think un-installing Root Explorer might put the system back where it was, or is there some re-set process that might be available? Perhaps un-installing and re-installing via the ethernet cable directly into my router for an internet connection?

    Thank you for your help….

Do not instal superuser in Universal Androot… I dont, and it work :)

In Universal Androot there are 3 buttons, the top one being where you select whether to install Superuser. Select it and choose positively not to install, and then root. Only then does Root Explorer work.
